July 24th, 2026 – Nonesuch Falls
A brief introduction is probably needed. I’d like to share photography and stories online in a better way than some of the methods I’ve traditionally used like IG and FB. I don’t claim to have many answers but I do already have a website and adding a tab for adventure stories is easy to do. So here we are. I like the blog style format because it allows for many more characters and pictures than most apps. It is a better layout too. Plus I won’t throw ads at you here. So off we go into whatever the heck this will be.
Recently Fish the dog and Roger and I took a walk to Nonesuch Falls in the Porkies. It is short and easy and has some apple trees that are fun to check on while they grow. We noticed 4 apple trees that we haven’t seen there before. You’d think these apples must taste amazing, Nonesuch Apples™, given where they are located. The irony is that I haven’t really tasted a great apple from the Nonesuch area, yet. Maybe we were late or early and their peak flavor eluded us by a week or two. Maybe they just aren’t that Nonesuchy. Who knows? When you give me a waterfall at the end of the short path I don’t mind holding out hope that this year is the year we get some delicious Nonesuch Apples. To be continued.
We made it to the falls and water levels were low as you’d expect in late July. This was one of the better air quality days that we have had recently so it was also nice to breathe some fresh air in the forest again. Fish wanted to scramble to the top of the waterfall and that led to this photograph of him and the rocky river downstream. Along with a small cameo from Roger on the bench. I like how loaded with rocks the channel is. Easy to imagine a peppy and fun section of wavy whitewater when spring melt is peaking too. We hit the trail back to our vehicle and noticed another apple tree we hadn’t seen before, nice!
After visiting Nonesuch Falls we decided to check out the bedrock of the Presque Isle River on the west side of the park. When flows are low it is fun to wade in the river and look at all of the different shapes in the bedrock. The Presque happens to have a lot of potholes which I find really interesting to explore and wonder about. The texture the small waves and features make are also a lot of fun to photograph. Nothing like getting to cool down in the river and use my camera at the same time.
This one makes me think of the surfer bro telling the news about getting pitted. Maybe that is just me but this little wave had a nice curl to it. Sometimes it can be tricky to line up the timing of the image with the specific shape I am trying to photograph. I enjoy standing in the water for a long time trying to get it just right. That was 100% the case here. For those wondering, the Presque Isle River is pretty warm in July. I wonder what the trouts have to say about that? I snapped a few more water photos well I was out there.
