“Lost and Forgotten Waterfalls of Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula” Coming September 2025
Who are you and what is the deal with this book?
Hey there! My name is Jake Ring and I’ve got some waterfalls to share with you. So many different aspects of life have led to the point where I have enough obscure waterfalls to put into a book. From whitewater raft guiding to DNR stream and lake science. I’ve spent the last decade+ exploring the rivers and creeks of the U.P. and can’t wait to share some of my favorite finds with you. The title of the book is “Lost and Forgotten Waterfalls of Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula”. This book will share the location and information you need to visit over 100 waterfalls in Gogebic and Ontonagon counties that aren’t in other Upper Peninsula waterfall books. Most of these are on small creeks, and a good portion of the creeks don’t even have a name. The book will include a description of where to park, how to generally get to the waterfall, and any other information that is unique to that specific spot. This is mostly a guidebook and source of waterfall locations for the reader, however it is in part, an opportunity to share my waterfall photography as well. Nearly every one of these waterfalls was found from map reading and in-person visits. If a waterfall is well known or well written about, it isn’t in this book. The book does include some waterfalls near well known spots, but the well known drops are not counted as part of the 100 waterfalls in the book, even if you do get to see those too. Consider them a bonus to your already awesome hike!
When will the book be available for purchase?
The book is estimated to be available to purchase starting in September 2025.
Can I pre-order a copy of the book?
Yes, please send me an email or DM and I can pass along the pre-order information.
Why should I buy this book and support this project?
By supporting this project you are supporting the expansion of waterfall knowledge and information that we have for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. You are ensuring that over 100 waterfalls not mentioned anywhere else get shared with the world. It is important to me to be able share the knowledge of waterfalls on public land that I have. I’ve built up this knowledge over years of walking as many creeks as I can. These places are meant to be appreciated and respectfully visited. By purchasing this book you are supporting a deeper appreciation for Michigan and the Upper Peninsula’s beautiful wild places.
How did you find all of these waterfalls?
Maps! I love reading maps and I love walking in the woods. Pair those 2 for 10 years of walks and exploring every week and eventually I found enough waterfalls worthy of a book. I’ve had my fair share of days without a whole lot of waterfalls too, and those are some great days outside as well. If there is a creek then I want to walk up it.
